When Is Concrete Resurfacing No Longer an Option

Does Concrete Resurfacing Last?

Concrete has been around for decades. It is versatile, easy to work with, comparatively cheap, and easy to come by. Simply mix aggregate stone, cement, sand, and water to make strong concrete. Throw in some steel rebar, and you can make massive buildings, bridges and dams. Or keep things small and make countertops or cast products. The most common thing people use concrete for flatwork. Things such as floors, patios, sidewalks, walkways, and even driveways. But as strong and durable as concrete is, it will not last forever. Eventually, the surface will show signs of wear and tear due to the freeze/thaw cycle, vibration, impacts, weight, or just plain sun damage. When that happens, should you replace the entire slab or consider concrete resurfacing?

Concrete resurfacing is a popular way to refinish concrete. It is done much the same way as refinishing hardwood floors. A top thin layer of concrete will be removed, and a new layer will be poured on top. This new layer is made to adhere to the old concrete. It is extremely durable and can last 10-20+ years when installed correctly. So to answer the question, yes, it can last.

Can My Concrete Be Resurfaced?

If the structural integrity of the underlying concrete has been compromised or there are deep fissures running throughout the slab, replacement is a better choice. The problems with the underlying slab will eventually damage the new resurfaced layer.

For example, if you add a new top layer to a damaged or cracked slab, those cracks are essentially just covered up, not fixed. Meaning the cause of the damage hasn’t been fixed either.

If you want your resurfaced concrete to last, it will need a strong secure base to sit on. Should that not be the case, then you must do the necessary repairs or replace the lot entirely.
